It all started with an idea
Simplifying and standardizing scientific experiments.
It was 1980 when a physicist, an engineer and a master precision mechanic joined forces to simplify and standardize scientific experiments. Their idea was to develop a standardized toolbox that would considerably simplify the construction of optical measurement and laboratory setups.
This modular system of optomechanical components quickly won over both industry and research. Precisely manufactured, modular in application and extremely reliable, OWIS components have made handling easier ever since. The rail-rider principle developed by OWIS has revolutionized the work of physicists, researchers and developers worldwide.
Our ambition: Pushing technological boundaries
Over the last four decades, the OWIS modular system has been continuously expanded and has grown in cooperation with customers and partners: from manual to motorized positioners to components and systems designed for clean room or vacuum applications.
Today, OWIS is an established name when it comes to optical beam guidance systems and positioners. And we at OWIS have big plans. Our ambition is to continue pushing technological boundaries in order to make our customers' pioneering ideas a reality and drive progress in high-tech industries.
What does OWIS actually mean?
Right from the beginning, it was about the development and manufacturing of "optical scientific systems" – in German: "optische wissenschaftliche Systeme". In search for a catchy company name, this wording was simplified. The name OWIS was born and OWIS GmbH was founded in Staufen im Breisgau (Germany) in 1980.
